For more than two years the Warsaw club Le Madame has been a second home for late night dancers and political liberals. But now it looks like the end of Le Madame. After much controversy, perceived as political by most commentators, City Hall, which owns the building in which the club operates, has issued an eviction notice. Gabriel Stille has more:

Hungarians last weekend re-elected a government for the first time since 1990 and at the same time increased the government's majority. The major governing Hungarian Socialist Party will have 190 seats, their junior coalition partner - the Free Democrats 20, the major opposition Civic Party Fidesz 164, while the junior opposition Hungarian Democratic Forum 11. One independent MP was elected. Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany has already begun coalition talks with the Free Democrats. The main points of contention are tax reform, health care, education

Circom Regional is an organisation of almost 300 public service European broadcasting stations in 38 states. It was founded to boost links between regional television stations. The Prix Circom 2006, a competition of regional European television programs, recently drew to a close in the Slovenian city of Maribor. Michael Manske of Radio Slovenia International reports:

As Hungary gets a new government Slovakia is gearing up for elections in two months time and a strike by health workers is causing plenty of controversy during the pre-election period. The medical personnel at six large Slovak hospitals are in their fourth week of strike action. They are asking for a 25 percent pay raise and an end to privatization of their institutions. From Bratislava, Anca Dragu reports.

The international Mental Disability Advocacy Centre (MDAC) wants to take the Czech Republic to court. The centre, an NGO promoting and protecting the interests of people with mental health problems, hopes to challenge the use of caged beds in Czech psychiatric wards and institutions. Caged beds are in use in the Czech Republic to restrain patients with mental disabilities. Although their use has been banned in Czech hospitals, they continue to be common in residential homes that are battling with low staff numbers and a severe lack of funding.

As millions of Catholics around the world commemorated the first anniversary of Pope John Paul II's death earlier this month, in his native Poland the atmosphere was very reminiscent of what the country witnessed a year ago, before and after the Pope's death. But is there anything beyond these manifestations of religious fervour?

In much of Central Europe there's an Easter Monday tradition which can surprise and shock outsiders. Men go from house to house symbolically beating women with a whip made from a few twigs of willow. In some countries, they also pour water or perfume on them. It's supposed to bring women good health throughout the year and women are expected to thank the men with an Easter egg, some food, drink, or a coin. Sounds strange? Katarina Richterova has more on this common custom in Central Europe's Catholic countries:

European Union foreign ministers have imposed a visa ban on the newly re-elected president of Belarus - Alexander Lukashenko and 30 of his top officials. The move, strongly supported by the Czech Republic and Poland, is aimed at pressing home the 25-nation bloc's denunciation of his re-election last month. Belarus dismissed the ban as "short-sighted". Mr Lukashenko is often referred to as Europe's last dictator.

In Hungary, the governing Socialist party MSZP took a narrow lead over the centre right Fidesz-KDNP in the first round of the parliamentary elections. Two smaller parties also achieved enough votes in the first round to get back into parliament. The battle ahead of the second round of voting on April 23, is indeed fierce.

Slovenia received an early Easter gift this year from the Vatican, when Pope Benedict approved plans for three new dioceses in the small Catholic country. Michael Manske sat down with one of the country's new bishops to talk about the new changes to the Slovenian Catholic Church.
