Europe's leaders decided to put the ratification of the constitution on hold at their summit in Brussels - they said there should be a period of real reflection on the future of Europe. So what do people in the new member countries think of the collapse of the Constitution and the rift over how the EU is funded? A joint session of the Slovenian and Croatian governments last week in Croatia ended with the signing of several agreements. One was on avoiding double taxation - but the other dealt with the sensitive issue of their disputed border.

For more than a year now Slovak authorities have been trying to acquire some 50 hectares of land on which the Korean carmaker Hyundai/Kia will build a factory. But small landowners are unhappy with the offered price and have refused to sell. They're now threatening to take the government to the Constitutional Court.

Most of the labour markets of the old EU member states remain closed to Polish job-seekers. While Great Britain, Ireland and Sweden are the only countries where Polish citizens can find legal jobs without applying for special permits, Holland is now launching a project which could further restrict the availability of its labour market to workers from new EU members.

Hungary has taken over the presidency of the 'Visegrad Four' - the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. The group works on regional cooperation and has been trying to achieve a common stance on a number of issues within the European Union.

Hungary has a new president. This week, Laszlo Solyom - an opposition candidate, won the vote ahead of the Socialist party candidate Katalin Szili. Now the Socialist Party leads the governing coalition so the election of Laszlo Solyom is a bit of a blow to the government's prestige.

This year Slovenia celebrates the 100th anniversary of Slovenian film. In 1905 the lawyer and photographer Karol Grossmann filmed people leaving church after Sunday service. It's considered to be the first Slovenian film. For filmmakers it is an important anniversary and so much is being done to celebrate it.

Slovak police launched Operation Hawk on Slovakia's roads on Monday morning. At the same time similar operations started in the Czech Republic, Poland, Austria, Hungary and Slovenia. The aim was to check on drivers, to make sure that they respect speed limits, wear a seat belt, keep their vehicle in good condition and don't drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Police patrols were also on the look out for wanted persons and stolen cars.

A new exhibition opened in the Czech Parliament building this week to commemorate the Lety concentration camp in South Bohemia. Some 1,300 Roma and Sinti were interned at Lety, which was run by Czech guards, not Germans. But sixty years on, a fierce debate is still raging over Lety.

The fall of communism sixteen years ago meant also the end of censorship. Before 1989, censorship was not just of thoughts and opinions critical of the communist regime.
