Martin Schmid, Matej Moravčík (PhD students at Department of Applied Mathematics, Charles University) and Viliam Lisý (Assistant professor, Czech Technical University) are three of several authors of a recent paper published in this month’s edition of Science reporting on the development of a revolutionary AI called DeepStack which they helped design at the University of Alberta.

Petr Hořava is a Czech-born prize-winning physicist specialising in string theory who teaches that as well as quantum field theory at the University of California, Berkley. Hořava is a member of the theory group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and was awarded the Czech Republic’s Neuron Prize for his contribution to theoretical physics in 2015.

Livno cheese is one of the best-known food specialties produced on the territory of former Yugoslavia. However, traditional cheese production has been seriously affected by the civil war that swept through the country in the 1990s. Since 2015, experts from the Czech Development Agency have been helping small-scale farmers to succeed on local markets and find ways to export their cheese abroad.

A group of seven Czech travellers, four men and three women, are planning to ride across Latin America on scooters, covering 11,000 kilometres from Mexico to the most southern tip of Argentina. They hit the road next weekend in Cancun, and if everything goes according to plan, they should be back in Prague in June next year.

It is exactly forty years since the first inhabitants started moving into the Czech Republic’s biggest housing estate, Jižní Město in the south of Prague. The local Chodovská tvrz gallery is marking this anniversary with an exhibition dedicated to the history of the district and to the everyday life of its inhabitants. Called Jižní město: From Utopia to Reality, it features large-scale models of the prefabricated houses, audio recordings, as well as art objects reflecting life at the so-called “Jižák”.
