A new survey suggests that close to a half of Czechs fear economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic. Official unemployment numbers remain relatively low, but may in fact be considerably higher, if surveys are to be believed. And while the government has implemented relief programmes, their practical effect has come under criticism from opposition MPs and the private sector.

The world-renown Prague Zoo partially opened to visitors on Monday, as part of a gradual easing of measures put in place to contain the spread of coronavirus. For the moment, the number of daily visitors is capped and indoor exhibitions and pavilions remain roped off. While the Czech public is definitely excited to see the animals, especially new arrivals, zookeepers say some animals are also keen to see people.

Thousands of Czechs – far more than anticipated – turned out at temporary coronavirus testing sites on Thursday to take part in a study aimed at determining the incidence of Covid-19 in the population. In response, the Ministry of Health has extending testing for the ‘collective immunity’ study.

The Ministry of Health has announced it is launching a collective study aimed at gauging the COVID-19 infection levels within the Czech population. Around 27,000 selected individuals and volunteers will be tested in order to give health officials the data needed to establish a better picture about the stage of the pandemic in the country. Results are expected to be available at the beginning of May.
