The coronavirus pandemic has sparked a global scramble for face masks and respirators. Most of the world's face masks are made in China and Taiwan, which currently find it hard to satisfy demand, and scientists are racing to find alternative sources. A team of researchers at the Czech Institute of Computer Science, Robotics and Cybernetics (CIIRC) has developed a high-grade respirator that can be printed on industrial 3D printers or produced by injection molding technology.

Dana Zátopková – one of the greatest Czech sportswomen of all time and a national sweetheart – died last Friday at the blessed age of 97. The winner of two Olympic medals and one-time world record holder in the javelin-throwing category was also known as the wife of the legendary runner Emil Zátopek.

Thousands of Czechs have started making DIY facemasks as the Czech Republic continues to face a serious shortage in the current coronavirus outbreak.

Due to being one of the epicentres of the coronavirus outbreak in the Czech Republic, 21 districts in the Moravian region around Olomouc have been closed off to the outside world for at least two weeks. Many only found out about it when confronted by police checkpoints on their way to work. However, those who spoke to Czech Radio say the locals are handling the situation well.
