The danger of cyber-attacks on key infrastructure was made clear in the Czech Republic on Wednesday, when one left a small-town hospital largely immobilised, forcing staff to move some patients to other facilities. But what kind of attack was it? And can such threats place lives in genuine danger?

There are currently just over 700 electric-powered cars on Czech roads, but as their number grows, Czech firefighters are undergoing training in extinguishing fires in lithium-ion batteries. Incidents around the world show that while putting out a fire in a fuel-powered vehicle may take 10 to 15 minutes, a fire in an electric power car may take over an hour with an increased danger of re-ignition.

The local council of Prague’s western Řeporyje district has unanimously voted in favour of building a memorial to the Russian Liberation Army troops that helped fight Nazi forces during the Prague Uprising in May 1945. The vote was preceded by a heated confrontation between the district’s mayor and representatives of the Russian federation about the historical legacy of the troops often referred to in Czech as “Vlasovci”.

Seventy thousand: that’s the number of LEGO bricks used by a Czech teenager to build the second-largest ever LEGO model of the Millennium Falcon, the famous star-ship from the Star Wars series. On Tuesday, his creation was officially listed in the Czech Book of Records.

As the European Commission prepares to outline its Green Deal on Wednesday, the Czech branch of Greenpeace has staged a protest in Prague against Prime Minister Andrej Babiš who looks like he might be the only European leader to block the EU’s decision to become carbon neutral by 2050. On Monday evening, Greenpeace activists symbolically set the government building on fire, screening images of flames on its façade.

A gunman killed six people in a waiting room in Ostrava’s Faculty hospital on Tuesday. The motive of the attack is still unclear, and the victims were shot in the head and neck at close range. The attacker who escaped from the scene later shot himself in the head as well.

A new Kantar CZ opinion poll suggests the Tricolour party of Václav Klaus Jr. would take 6.5 percent of the vote in a general election. It is the first time such a survey has put the conservative grouping, which was launched in June, above the 5 percent threshold needed to enter the Chamber of Deputies. I asked political scientist Petr Just which other parties were likely to be losing voters to Tricolour.

It has not been a good week for the Czech prime minister. Not only has a European Commission found Andrej Babiš to be in a conflict of interest, demanding the Czech state return the money paid to the Agrofert conglomerate he founded, but criminal proceedings have been restarted against him in a subsidy fraud case that has dragged on for years. Mr Babiš’s coalition partners are thus far standing by him, but another mass anti-government demonstration is being called for next week.

Nearly one in four vehicles on Czech roads exceeds permitted emissions limits, an inspection carried out by the ministries of transport and environment this summer suggest. The alarming figures, presented this week, come nearly a year after the introduction of stricter rules in emissions testing for vehicles.
