Doctors Without Borders (MSF) Czech Republic has joined forces with artist Toy_Box to launch a new exhibition on Prague’s Artwall Gallery. I visited the opening in Letná Park to learn about the collaboration—and received a lesson in public health as well.

Members of the Czech Air Force, the British Royal Air Force, Second World War veterans, church and cultural dignitaries attended celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Czechoslovak Airforce at the Winged Lion Memorial in Prague’s Klarov park on Tuesday. The fact that both the Czechoslovak Airforce and the RAF are celebrating their centenary this year was an occasion to highlight the close ties between Czech and British airmen.

Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov, who was sentenced to twenty years in jail in a political trial after protesting against Russia’s annexation of Crimea, has been on a hunger strike in a Russian prison for over three months now. Amidst growing international concern for his health, the Czech NGO People in Need has launched a campaign calling for his release. I asked Zuzana Gruberová of People in Need to tell me more.

The first-ever public display of the famous blue and red Mauritius stamps and the so-called Bombay Cover Post Office will be the highlight of this year’s world exhibition of postage stamps, Praga 2018, which gets underway in the Czech capital on Wednesday. The event will also mark 100th anniversary of the foundation of Czechoslovakia and 100 years since the issue of the first Czechoslovak stamp.

The number of Russians residing and working in the Czech Republic has been steadily growing in recent years. Many come here in search of a better life, to escape the authoritarian regime of Vladimir Putin or homophobia in their homeland. And many find that the Russian led-invasion of Czechoslovakia casts a long shadow.

Today marks the midway point for students at the 62nd Summer School of Slavonic Studies in Prague, a month-long program for academics and enthusiasts of Slavic language and culture. I spoke with program coordinators to learn more about the school and its international student body.

Czech diplomats have negotiated the release of two workers for a German non-governmental organization who were being held in Syria. The two men, one of whom is a German national, were handed over to Czech Foreign Minister Jan Hamáček in Damascus and flown to Prague where they were met by representatives of their respective embassies.

The ongoing hot and dry weather that continues to grip most parts of Europe is forcing Czech farmers to slaughter their cows early as they have no hay left to feed them. With grass turning brown and brittle, cows have very little to eat and livestock breeders are forced to break into their winter reserves much earlier than usual.

A storm is brewing in the Czech government over financial support to NGOs. The prime minister’s ANO party wants to cut state support for NGOs by 3 billion crowns, while its coalition partner, the Social Democrats, are vehemently against the plan. The debate is now focused on which NGOs should have their state support slashed.

The remains of the three Czech soldiers killed in a suicide bombing in Afghanistan have been flown back to the Czech Republic. As the military plane carrying their remains arrived back home bells pealed nationwide in their memory.
