Britain’s possible exit from the EU will be one of the big European issues this year. The Czech Republic, currently heading the Visegrad Four group, has suggested it’s willing to see some reforms that could help keep Britain in. But how far are Prague and its neighbours willing to go?

The Czech Radio station Wave is today celebrating a major landmark; the youth and alternative station has now been delivering challenging music and all manner of arts and lifestyle reports for exactly a decade. To find out about Radio Wave’s big day and future plans, I spoke to its director of programming, Robert Candra. But I first asked him whether Wave’s removal from FM and conversion to an internet station two years after its 2006 launch had felt like a limitation.

EU foreign affairs chief, Federica Mogherini, visited Prague on Monday for talks on some of the challenges facing the alliance in the present day, including migration, security and the fight against terrorism. The operative word at her meetings with the country’s top officials was “unity”.

Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski met with his Czech counterpart Lubomír Zaorálek in Prague on Monday, for the first Czech-Polish talks since the new conservative government of the Law and Justice party took office late last year. I spoke to Michal Kořán, an expert from the Czech Institute of International Affairs about how the change of guard in Poland could affect bilateral relations:

The Czech Republic is reckoned to have the second lowest unemployment rate in Europe, only beaten by neighbouring Germany. But the good news over recent months was interrupted on Monday with the latest unemployment figures for December showing a slight upturn in the jobless total. So how is the labour market looking in the Czech Republic.

A documentary is now screening in Czech cinemas on the life of the actress Lída Baarová, sometimes described as the first Czech international movie star. For its tragic twists and roller coaster ride, Baarová’s own life story, including a tempestuous love affair with the Nazi propaganda boss Joseph Goebbels, surpassed any of her film roles. The young star ended her life in exile, a controversial, if not despised personality in her homeland.

The Václav Havel Library, along with the Václav Havel Foundation and the Art for Amnesty – Amnesty International are holding a number of events throughout the year to mark what would have been the ex-president’s 80th birthday. I spoke to the head of Václav Havel Library and Havel biographer, Michael Žantovský, about the events, but I first asked him whether he thought that the presence of Václav Havel was still being missed in his homeland:

Immense moral satisfaction. That’s the reaction from human rights activists after the Czech Republic’s Constitutional Court ordered the police to reopen their investigation into the exploitation of hundreds of foreign workers. Police not once but twice swept the case under the carpet in spite of the weighty dossier of proof against the agencies accused of involvement in modern day slavery.

Communist Party MP Marta Semelová, who shocked many with her comments on the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia and the judicial murder of Milada Horáková in the 1950s, will not have to apologize for her words. A Prague district court dismissed the case against her on Wednesday, saying that the complaint was legally unsubstantiated.
