Czech MEP Jan Zahradil will appear at the US Republican Party convention in Tampa Bay, Florida, later this week. The convention will formally nominate Mitt Romney as the party’s presidential candidate, and Mr Zahradil, who is a deputy chair of a conservative group in the European Parliament, says conservatives would welcome Mitt Romney’s becoming the next US president. Jan Zahradil will appear at a panel entitled Hey America, Don’t Take This Road. RP spoke to the Czech MEP and asked him what his message to the Republican delegates will be.

The legal team representing former central Bohemian governor David Rath has filed a complaint over the 14 million crown bail set by a district court which effectively blocked any chance of release. The deadline for posting bail came and went on Thursday, with family members reportedly only being able to come up with a little over a third of the needed amount.

The Senate on Thursday rejected one of the most controversial components of the government's fiscal consolidation package - a hike in value-added and income taxes aimed at bringing the debt in public finances under 3 percent of GDP in 2013. The proposed bill has come under fire not just from the opposition parties but also from economists and, not least, the prime minister’s own Civic Democrats who argue that it will drag the country deeper into recession.
