Just a month after the government gave the thumbs down to a costly and inefficient electronic health project, there are indications that it could be facing another international arbitration case over the decision. The minority shareholder in the joint stock company which masterminded the ill-fated project has stated in no uncertain terms that it considers the decision illegal and is ready to take the case to court to defend its interests.

The Czech crown firmed upon news of the election victory of pro-EU parties in Greece and all the day’s papers commented on Europe’s palpable sigh of relief. Although not a euro-zone member, the Czech Republic has nevertheless watched the Greek drama unfold with considerable concern.

The past few months have brought increasing evidence of the fact that after years of futile efforts the anti-corruption drive in the Czech Republic is finally producing results. Within a relatively short space of time the police has sought and gained permission to prosecute four parliament deputies and is said to be working on several other high profile cases.

Czech MPs are to decide next week whether or not to allow the prosecution of another of their colleagues – coalition MP, and deputy speaker of the house Vlasta Parkanová. The anti-corruption police accuse the former defence minister of wasting nearly 660 million crowns in a deal to buy transport planes for the Czech military. Mrs. Parkanova’s party claims the charges are unsubstantiated as the decision was taken by the whole government.

William N. Oatis, an Associated Press correspondent who served in Prague in the hardline 1950s entered cold war history when the communist regime made him confess falsely to espionage and sentenced him to 10 years in jail. Now, fifteen years after his death, recordings of that shameful show trial have unexpectedly been unearthed in the country’s National Archives.

The Prague High Prosecutor Vlastimil Rampula will have to leave his post once again after the Supreme Administrative Court ruled that he made serious errors in the execution of his duties. The court thus settled the latest stage in a dispute between Rampula and Justice Minister Jiří Pospíšil, who sacked him for influencing a number of high-profile political cases.

The Czech national football team rebounded on Tuesday from its opening loss at EURO 2012, by defeating opponents Greece. The squad got off to the best possible start: scoring two goals inside of six minutes. But a mistake by goalie Čech in the second half put Greece back in the game, and made this one closer than it should have been.

Representatives of a new Roma civic association had their first audience with Prime Minister Petr Nečas on Monday. As the Roma community’s problems seem to be worsening the group is seeking other support from that government than investment, and have petitioned the prime minister for a Roma cabinet position with real authority to effect change.

The Broadway production of Once, a musical based on the successful 2006 film of the same name starring Irish and Czech musicians Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, walked away the big winner at this year’s Tony Awards. The production clinched a total of eight awards including Best Direction of a Play and Best Musical.

On Sunday Czechs marked the 70th anniversary one of the biggest tragedies in the country’s history the extermination of Lidice village, the Nazis’ brutal revenge for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, the Nazi governor of Bohemia and Moravia. The unprecedented massacre of civilians, followed just two weeks later by the razing to the ground of a second village, Ležáky, opened the eyes of the international community to the true nature of the regime and to this day remains one of the most powerful mementos of WWII.
