Thousands of Polish army officers, teachers and intellectuals were killed by the Soviet NKVD in the notorious Katyn massacre during World War II. But the fact Czechs were also murdered there has for long been an untold aspect of this dark chapter of history. Now Czech researchers are piecing together the story of several hundred such victims, while there are also plans to unveil a memorial to some of them.

As elections draw closer, political parties and civic activists are doing their best to encourage people to vote. Brewer Stanislav Bernard, a right-leaning former candidate for the Czech Senate, has come up with his own campaign. He is offering beer to young Czechs in order to encourage them to vote.

The Czech national hockey team’s run at the Ice Hockey World Championship is back on track; on Tuesday, despite falling behind early, the team beat opponents Canada by a score of 3:2. The result means that the Czech Republic moves on to the knockout stage and faces Finland in the quarterfinals.

Keenly anticipated general elections are being held in the Czech Republic at the end of the next week. Opinion polls suggest the Social Democrats should come first, though what would happen next remains extremely unclear. The leader of their main rivals the Civic Democrats has just poured cold water on the idea of a “grand coalition”, though there are a plethora of other possible post-election permutations.

Fears of major flooding in east of the Czech Republic became a reality late Monday as the Central Moravian town of Troubky was inundated. While that town was being evacuated, a state of emergency has been declared in 16 other locations around Moravia. The rain continues to fall, but meteorologists monitoring the situation hope that the worst is over.

The Czech Republic is currently playing host to the British Army's largest integrated land-air military exercise, called Flying Rhino. More than 2,000 troops from the UK's First Armoured Division backed up by several squadrons of the Royal Air Force are working with Czech and other NATO allies to simulate the conflict in Afghanistan.

Parts of Moravia have been hit by flooding, with rivers swelling to increasingly dangerous levels. So far flooding has resulted in at least one death and seen hundreds of people evacuated. Further complicating the situation are strong winds and heavy rainfall which have knocked out power in around ten thousand homes. Meanwhile, meteorologists warn that the situation is not likely to let up any time soon.

Scores of pre-fabricated apartment blocks know as "paneláky" make Jižní Město one of Prague’s greyest suburbs. Currently, however, a festival called Street for Art is bringing a splash of colour to the concrete jungle. Alongside a temporary gallery called BLOX, it features a range of outdoor events including a farmers’ market and guided bus tour. Jiří Sulženko, one of the organizers of Street for Art, explained what led them establish the festival three years ago.
