British Prime Minister Tony Blair, whose country now holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, faces a frosty reception at meetings in the Estonian and Hungarian capitals this week over his plans to push for lower subsidies to new EU member states like the Czech Republic. Mr Blair's as yet unpublished plan to reduce the overall EU budget for 2007-13 in large part hinges on concentrating cuts on the new member states - the poorest within the union.

International consultants PricewaterhouseCoopers has released the results of its biennial global economic survey, based on thousands of interviews with senior executives, casting light on trends in economic crime. According to the report, global economic crime has grown substantially since 2003's result - an 8 percentage point increase. Most notable, worldwide, has been the increase of fraud. Zlate casy medii (The Golden Age of Media) is the name of an exhibition which has just opened at the National Museum here in Prague. The museum's biggest exhibition of the year, it takes a look back at the history of mass media in this country and features several colourful interactive sections. Among its curators is academic and media analyst Jan Jirak; I asked him what the organisers were hoping to achieve.

Central European leaders have issued a new call expressing support to those countries waiting to join the European Union, appealing to the EU to keep the momentum of enlargement to southern and eastern Europe. The call came at the end of a meeting of the Central European Initiative in the Slovak spa town of Piestany.

In the course of the last year ten Czech women have been killed in their homes by violent husbands or partners. Hundreds of others suffer psychological and physical abuse on a daily basis - often before the eyes of their children who are powerless to help. Now a new exhibition entitled "Silent Witnesses" is aiming to jolt society and Parliament into awareness of a growing problem.

Eleven prime ministers and six government ministers are meeting in the Slovak spa town of Piestany for a two-day conference of the Central European Initiative. The platform puts together countries from Central and Eastern Europe, from Austria to Ukraine and from Albania to Poland and focuses on regional cooperation, with an emphasis on economy.
