November 17 is the anniversary of the start of Czechoslovakia’s Velvet Revolution. But what is less well known is that six days earlier it was preceded by what has been described as the “smog revolution”, when hundreds of people – angered by the appalling state of the local environment – took to the streets in the north Bohemian city of Teplice.

For his part, he’s bicycling from Brisbane, Australia to Copenhagen, Denmark. 15 months into his journey, Kim arrived in Prague for a lap around Wenceslas Square and some meetings with the press to promote the idea that if he can cycle half-way round the world, certainly others can cycle to work.

One of the better-known saints of the Catholic church, St. Martin is honored on November 11th in the Czech Republic with the Feast of St. Martin, a meal of duck, dumplings and red cabbage. One of the greatest Czech footballers of his generation, Vladimír Šmicer, has announced the end of his career. The 36-year-old former Liverpool player has suffered a lot of injuries in recent years, and said after a game for Slavia Prague on Monday that he had pulled on his boots for the last time.

The tortuous process of choosing a new European Commissioner is over – the government announced on Tuesday that Europe Minister Štefan Füle would be nominated to the five-year post. The breakthrough came after the two major political parties – who control much of the decision-making in the caretaker cabinet – finally agreed on an acceptable candidate.

Prices are falling in the Czech Republic according to the latest official figures. While that might seem to be a cause for celebration for shoppers the phenomenon of deflation usually sends a chill down the spine of economists and politicians. Prague could soon experience a crippling transport strike. Trade unions at the city’s transport authority are demanding an increase in funding for the city’s metro, tram and bus system. City Hall has made them an offer – but both sides are still far from reaching an agreement.

Just three days ago Jan Čermák and Hynek Matonoha – members of the Czech elite rapid response force serving in Logar, Afghanistan – were honoured by the Czech defence minister and the country’s chief of the general staff for their performance during duty. Three days later, the two, along with the army itself, are embroiled in a major scandal. The Czech daily Mladá fronta Dnes reported on Monday that the two officers from the elite unit had - unbelievably - worn Nazi emblems on their helmets during their tour of duty. World leaders past and present on Monday gathered in Berlin for the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The celebrations, which are expected to culminate with the toppling of a symbolic wall of dominoes, have attracted more than 100,000 people. One of them is Štepán Benda a Czech émigré who has lived in Berlin since 1968 when he emigrated from communist Czechoslovakia. He was there when the wall came down and earlier today he shared his memories of the historic event.
