With snow continuing to fall across the Czech Republic, people are getting tired of the long winter. Wild animals are equally stressed as we await at least another week of cold temperatures. With record numbers of deer expected to die this winter, Linda Mastalir asked Helena Jankova from the Czech-Moravian Hunters Association about how the long & harsh winter has been affecting wild animals:

This week - on March 12th - the Czech Republic will mark the 7th anniversary since the country joined NATO in 1999. Over that period the country's military has changed beyond recognition - investing in new technology, going fully professional, redefining its overall approach to warfare. Later this year, Czech soldiers will be able to serve on key foreign missions with greater impact than ever before.

The deadly H5N1 virus - bird flu - has made all the headlines in the Czech Republic in recent days and it is safe to say it is only a matter of time before a positive case is confirmed here. Every neighbouring country - the latest, Poland - has already found evidence. Three months ahead of parliamentary elections, the ruling Social Democrats are facing a serious dilemma over a proposed new Penal Code. The much needed bill, which among other things reduces sentences for euthanasia, bans the cloning of humans, and introduces higher sentences for murder, lacks an important article against large-scale fraud. Just like many other industries, European shoemakers are finding it hard to compete with an influx of cheap products from Asia, and the Czech Republic, with its great shoemaking tradition, has been affected significantly. The EU's anti-dumping experts will be meeting on Thursday to discuss duties recommended earlier this year by the European Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson. Low-cost airlines are now operating from Prague International Airport in increasing numbers, and with this rise in popularity comes the inevitable competition for customers, with companies drastically reducing air ticket prices in an attempt to entice clients to their airlines. Financial incompetence has been a perennial theme in the Czech Republic in the 16 years since the fall of Communism. The latest news - splashed over the front pages this morning - suggests that little has changed. According to new statistics released by the European Commission, the Czech Republic has little idea how to access the billions of euros allocated to the country by the EU.
