It has long been taken as a given that in the 1980s President Vaclav Klaus - then employed as an economist at the Czechoslovak National Bank - was monitored by the StB, communist Czechoslovakia's secret police. But until now, concrete evidence was lacking. Not any more: on Wednesday a Czech newspaper, Mlada Fronta Dnes, revealed that it had uncovered microfiche dating back to the 1980s, confirming that Mr Klaus had indeed been watched.

The Terezin Memorial was established in the former ghetto where Jewish people from various European countries were interned during WWII. Among its activities is an annual literary competition, and the results of this year's contest were announced in Terezin on Monday. Inspired by Hana Greenfield, a Czech holocaust survivor and the author of Fragments of Memory, the event has been attracting more participants every year. This year, the motto of the competition was 'The danger of forgetting'.

Jan Sibik is perhaps the Czech Republic's best known photo-journalist. In two decades he has undertaken over 200 assignments around the world, covering everything from the genocide in Rwanda to the devastation wreaked on Sri Lanka by the 2005 tsunami. The photographer has a new exhibition on at the moment in Prague, with the focus this time on the women of Kibera in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, one of the biggest and poorest slums in Africa.

In May, the unemployment rate was the lowest in almost three years. Down to 6.4 percent, the number of people looking for jobs dropped by more than 19,000 compared to the preceding month. While on average there were some 3 applicants for every vacancy, just a year ago there were almost double. But this positive development also has a down side. The dream of many fans of Bohemians 1905 football club has come true. After a victory over their main rivals HFK Olomouc on Monday, the historic Prague club were promoted to the Czech first division, four years after the club left the top flight. It was a difficult period, with the club coming very close to extinction - but now Bohemians are back.

EU Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel made clear in Luxembourg this week that she is in favour of a School Fruit plan that would reinforce nutrition in schools and help fight childhood obesity while also helping European fruit producers. Under the plan, the European Union would buy fruit from EU farmers which would then end up in the classroom. Children would be given soft fruit - apples or pears - free of charge. The cost of the far-reaching project so far is estimated at 200 million Euros, which would apparently be covered in part from the EU

It's just two and a half weeks now until the 42nd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, one of the biggest events on the Czech cultural calendar. This year's most famous guest will be Rene Zellweger, star of Bridget Jones's Diary, though organisers also revealed a number of other interesting names at the last news conference before the glamorous festival begins. Programme director Julietta Zacharova outlined some of the likely highlights of this year's KVIFF.

Since last week Czech police have been searching last-known addresses of controversial Czech businessman Tomas Pitr, after he failed to begin serving a five-year jail sentence at Prague's Pankrac prison. Along with Radovan Krejcir, Pitr is easily one of the best known Czech millionaires wanted by police, in his case for tax fraud dating back to the early '90s. No one seems to know where he is, and there are fears that, like Radovan Krejcir who escaped to the Seychelles, Tomas Pitr could also give authorities the slip.

The supreme state prosecutor, Renata Vesecka, has strongly rejected accusations that she was politically pressured into interfering in a corruption case against Deputy Prime Minister Jiri Cunek. On Friday, Ms Vesecka dismissed the prosecutor in charge of the case. She says he made a procedural mistake. But the opposition accuses her of helping to slow down proceedings against Mr Cunek as it is now unclear when and whether at all his case will come to court.

Russian President Vladimir Putin made a surprise proposal during the G8 summit in the German resort of Heilegendamm on Thursday when he offered to his US counterpart George Bush to share a base to detect missile attacks. Mr Putin offered President Bush the joint use of a Russian radar station in Azerbaijan as an alternative to US plans to station parts of a missile shield in the Czech Republic and Poland, an idea fiercely criticised by Russia. Czech officials have so far adopted a 'wait and see' attitude to Moscow's proposal.
