One of the founding fathers of Czechoslovakia, Slovak astronomer and politician Milan Rastislav Stefanik was born on July 21st 1880 exactly 125 years ago. Stefanik first studied in Prague where he met his professor and future collaborator Tomas Garigue Masaryk. Later he moved to France and together with Masaryk and Edvard Benes endeavored to establish an independent Czechoslovak state. But today Stefanik is far less widely remembered than the other two.

The cabinet approved a bill on Wednesday to legalise prostitution, which would make the world's oldest profession a legal and regulated business. The bill must first be approved by parliament, and its safe passage through the lower and upper houses is far from assured. So what, exactly, does the bill propose?

The Czech charity People in Need has been forced to cease its activities in Chechnya and Ingushetia. The Russian authorities refused to extend its permit to operate in North Caucasus where People in Need has been working since 2000.

During the summer season many towns around the Czech Republic compete for tourists by putting on all kinds of festivals. Some towns have arts festivals of various kinds, while others celebrate all kinds of Czech folk traditions. Food and drink are also common themes, with Trebic for instance holding an annual potato festival. But surely one of the most unusual events of its kind has to be the "festival cesneku", or garlic festival, held every year in the town of Buchlovice in south Moravia.
