The internationally acclaimed sitar player Anoushka Shankar, the daughter of the legendary Indian sitar player and composer Ravi Shankar, is one of the musicians performing at this year's 60th Prague Spring Music Festival. On Thursday, Anoushka will play her father's Concerto for Sitar and Orchestra No. 1, alongside the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Even though there were many Czechs who suffered appallingly during the Second World War - whether it was in concentration camps or as forced labour - most of them have only recently began to receive any kind of compensation. Due to the tense relations between West Germany and the countries of the Eastern Bloc, for decades there was little hope of reaching agreement. At the weekend the Czech Republic saw its first ever Den boubelek - or Chubbies' Day - dedicated to helping people lose weight. A battle of wills has broken out between the Czech Prime Minister Jiri Paroubek and President Vaclav Klaus. Mr. Klaus is a strong critic of the EU Constitution and his provocative remarks with regard to the treaty have raised the strongly pro-European Prime Minister's hackles. Sixty years after the end of the German occupation, the Czech Republic's Roma community finally has hope that a concentration camp where several hundred Romanies died, will be turned into a proper memorial site. Following pressure from the European Parliament and activists here in the Czech Republic, the Czech government has announced that it will take steps to acquire the site and secure the relocation of a pig farm that has become a deep international embarrassment to the country.
