The Iranian embassy in Prague has demanded an apology from two Czech newspapers. A few days ago, to illustrate articles on the debate, they both reprinted one of the fourteen Danish cartoons that sparked off protest in much of the Muslim world. The papers insist they have nothing to apologise for.

All eyes will be on Turin on Friday, for the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games. Coinciding with the start of the games, and in a further step towards the digitalization of television in the Czech Republic, public broadcaster Czech TV is on Friday starting a new channel which will feature nothing but sport.

The unemployment rate in the Czech Republic last month was just over 9 percent. This is not as bad as in neighbouring Germany, or Poland, but it does give cause for concern. Every country wants its citizens to buy domestic products as much as possible, and the Czech Republic is no exception. In the past few years, it's taken a more active approach in promoting the wares of Czech food producers through the work of the State Agriculture Intervention Fund. The fund created the Klasa mark in 2003 as a stamp of approval for Czech goods that meet several conditions, and it seems that more consumers are now taking notice.

The European Commission has just released a report on employment urging original EU members to ethink restrictions on the movement of labour from new EU countries. The report was prepared by EU Commissioner and former Czech Prime Minister Vladimir Spidla. Britain's EU commissioner for trade, Peter Mandelson, came to Prague on Tuesday to hold a speech at an international business conference. Before the event, Mr Mandelson met members of the Czech government to discuss - above all - economic issues.

The massive protests against the Danish cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed have rocked the world. Buildings have been burnt down; people have died at demonstrations. At the same time another row, on a rather smaller scale, is raging in a small Belgian coastal town. Forecasters are finally predicting an end to the freeze that has gripped much of Europe this winter and the Prague climate is expected soon to return to more characteristic seasonal conditions.
