Following the Munich Agreement of 1938, which allowed Hitler to occupy Czechoslovakia's border regions, the Czechoslovak government fled to London, where they were to remain until after the War. Many of Edvard Benes's cabinet-in-exile had children, and not wanting them to lose their Czech, his government set up a Czechoslovak state school in the UK. Few people know about the school today, but that's something which should change with a new exhibition of its archives. Senator Edvard Outrata was a student at the school:

Under the previous communist system, there was essentially no such thing as a non-profit sector in this country, and many Czechs were quick to embrace the idea of a civil society in the early 1990s. But 15 years on, what state is the Czech non-profit sector in? That's something addressed in a new report by the Civil Society Development Foundation.

Some 30,000 ice hockey fans gathered in Prague's Old Town Square on Monday afternoon to welcome home the Czech national team. Monday was a day of celebration for many Czechs after the country's ice hockey team won the Ice Hockey World Championship in Vienna on Sunday again after four years.

A memorial to the second Czechoslovak President Edvard Benes was unveiled on Monday in front of the Foreign Ministry headquarters near the Prague Castle. President Benes is not as widely popular today as his predecessor, Tomas Garigue Masaryk. But he is still very much respected among many Czechs, who see Edvard Benes as a champion of democracy and fighter against Nazism. Their view is, however, not shared by the Sudeten Germans — ethnic Germans expelled after World War II —who blame President Benes for their plight.

Singled out for extermination by the Nazis along racial lines, only five out of every hundred Czech Roma are thought to have survived the Second World War. The majority were interned in the Czech-run camps of Lety and Hodinin, where hundreds of Roma—mostly children—died from disease, hunger and abuse at the hands of Czech guards, and from where thousands more were sent on to Auschwitz and other Nazi death camps. Doctors in the Czech Republic are ringing alarm bells: medical statistics show that the health of the nation is rapidly deteriorating in the wake of short-lived improvement in the early 90s. Over half of the population is overweight. High cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, stress and a sedentary lifestyle are responsible for the fact that one in two Czechs die of cardio-vascular diseases. One in four die of cancer and one in five as a result of heavy smoking.

At the start of the tournament some may have questioned the Czechs' ability to overcome some very big teams at this year's Ice Hockey World Championship but they did it and cast aside all doubt. After edging the U.S. in penalty shots and eliminating last year's runner-up Sweden in extra time, the Czechs faced Canada in the final on Sunday and came out on top. The coalition government of Prime Minister Jiri Paroubek won a confidence vote in the lower house of parliament on Friday, a move set to end once and for all months of political crisis in the Czech Republic. Mr Paroubek replaced Stanislav Gross, who had been forced to step down amid a row over his personal finances. All 101 MPs in the ruling coalition voted for Mr Paroubek's government, while the remaining 99 opposition deputies all voted against.
