The Prague Spring International Music Festival is an annual event that showcases some of the best classical music from both Czech and international composers. Since its beginning in 1946, it has become one of the leading festivals of its kind in the world, and a galaxy of stars such as Herbert von Karajan and Arthur Rubinstein have appeared at the event down through the years. An opening cemetery was held at Prague's Vysehrad cemetery on Wednesday to mark the start of this year's event.

Ten days after the Czech Republic became a full member of the European Union, key Czech political figures took a day trip to Brussels to celebrate. Pavla Horakova went with them.

In a historic first, the Czech Interior Ministry has removed a single name from its public list of thousands of alleged former agents and paid informants who worked for the StB, the communist-era secret police.

When the Czech Republic joined to the European Union on the first of May, the Delegation of the European Commission in Prague ceased to exist. There's no cause for alarm — it was merely transformed into a "Representation" office of the Commission. Such offices exist now in all 25 member states and they carry out many of the same duties as the old Delegaations, acting as a liaison with Brussels. The focus of this year's Prague Bookworld was on Irish, Scottish and Welsh literature. Among the guests at Bookworld, which was held at Prague's Vystaviste trade-fair centre, was novelist Michael Collins, who was born in Ireland but has made his name in the US, with books such as The Keepers of Truth and The Resurrectionists. Before the event ended on Sunday evening, I spoke to Michael Collins and asked him why he had come to Prague for Bookworld.

The 68th Ice Hockey World Championship wrapped up in Prague on Sunday with a dramatic comeback by Team Canada against Sweden to take the title for the second year in a row. Jan Velinger reports on the match and how it marked the end of an exciting of three weeks in Prague and Ostrava that hockey fans won't soon forget.

Since its first line began running three decades ago, Prague's metro system has expanded with the city. It now has three lines in an underground railway network covering around 50 km, and it has firmly established itself as the transport backbone of the Czech capital. Eight Cuban dissidents are currently in Prague meeting various politicians and human rights activists to discuss ways of promoting human rights in Cuba, an issue that brings back plenty of painful memories here in the Czech Republic.
