The producer of one of the Czech Republic's most famous beers - Pilsner Urquell - announced on Wednesday that for the first time ever, the famous brew will be produced outside the city of Plzen. Pilsner Urquell, owned by the beer giant South African Breweries, announced that it was planning to open a satellite brewery in the Polish town of Tychy, in the heavily industrial Katovice area. The Czech Republic is playing an active role in helping to ease the plight of people in war-torn Chechnya, which in recent years has experienced two wars when fighting for independence from Russia. One of the Czech organizations operating in the region is the Czech Catholic Charity. Catholic Bishop Vaclav Maly and the head of the charity, Jaroslav Kopriva spent a week in the region earlier this month to see the Czech humanitarian aid working. Alena Skodova reports:

The case involving an alleged plot to kill the Czech investigative reporter, Sabina Slonkova took a new turn on Tuesday. Because one of the prime suspects is a former senior foreign ministry official, the Czech President Vaclav Havel has now suggested that the man's boss at the time, former foreign minister Jan Kavan, should resign from his posts in international organisations. The Czech Republic's second largest city, Brno, is preparing for massive redundancies at several local companies. Although the lay-offs are expected to cost thousands of jobs in a city of half a million people, the local authorities say they they will have little chance of finding new jobs unless a new strategic investor arrives. There are countries in the world where threats and even murders of journalists are no exception. Between 1992 and 2001, 389 journalists were killed around the world, 18 of them women. Only 91 reporters died while covering armed conflicts. The majority were investigative journalists. Only 20 cases have been solved and the murderers punished. Is Czech Republic becoming dangerous for journalists too? Pavla Horakova has more.

Police arrested four people on Monday in connection with an alleged plot to kill a top investigative journalist. The four - who include a former senior government official - allegedly conspired to kill Sabina Slonkova, a journalist with the leading daily Mlada Fronta Dnes, in the most high-profile case in the Czech Republic's post-Communist history. A number of Czech customs officers, policemen and employees of the Ministry of Trade and Industry are currently attending a special course in the United States. The City Gallery Prague has organised two exhibitions displaying the works of several promising young Czech artists. One of the exhibitions is currently underway at the Golden Ring House. It has the provocative name of "Young Flesh", chosen to attract the widest circle of viewers, and features artwork from 24 students. But is it realistic to expect to be able to make a living from art in today's Czech Republic?
