Amid heated debates regarding next years state budget and the growing deficit former Prime Minter and leader of the opposition Civic Democrats Vaclav Klaus has called on the government to take action to prevent a fiscal crisis in the Czech Republic.

The upcoming NATO summit scheduled for November 21st to 22nd in Prague is expected to attract anti-globalization demonstrators from all over the world, including several radical groups. Wednesday's papers are full of speculation that far-left radicals such as the Italian organization Ya Basta are getting ready for violent clashes with the Czech police. So how are the police themselves getting ready? Alena Skodova reports:

It took Czech police just over a year to gather enough evidence to be able to charge nine Czech skinheads for allegedly racist activities, including the spread of Nazi propaganda in the Czech Republic. The suspects, the oldest of whom is twenty-five, the youngest nineteen, are believed to have organised four key skinhead concerts featuring racist music, concerts aimed at spreading hate and drawing both local supporters and followers from abroad. This Tuesday it's 120 years since Bedrich Smetana's cycle of symphonic poems, 'Ma vlast'- or 'My Country'- was premiered in Prague. The weekend elections clearly revealed a new trend among Czech voters - a turn away from political parties and a new confidence in non-affiliated candidates. Independent voters have suddenly become a force to be reckoned with, both in the Senate and in local government. In the process of decision making, it will be the independents who will be in a position to tip the scales. Over the weekend Czechs across that country went to the polls to elect members of the Senate and local administration. The governing coalition parties lost their majority in the Senate, while in the regions independent candidates swept the boards.

An unusual requiem mass took place on All-Souls Day in the Trinity Church close to the Vltava in Prague, remembering all those who lost their lives in rivers across the country, especially the seventeen victims of the August floods. The mass was organised by an interesting club with a very long tradition.
