On Tuesday, for the first time since the devastating floods, Prague's National Gallery allowed journalists to see collections of ancient Czech art in St. Agnes convent in the historical centre of Prague. Although the water in the convent came up to a height of 2 metres, the precious 14th century pictures and sculptures were luckily saved. Alena Skodova was there and has this report:

The World Summit on Sustainable Development is currently underway in the South African city of Johannesburg. The conference has not been uncontroversial and has received a lot of attention from news organisations around the world. However, with the Czech media still focused on the aftermath of the recent floods, the World Summit has not been grabbing too many headlines in the Czech Republic. Pavla Horakova has the story.

Cynics would say it was only a matter of time before crimes related to last month's catastrophic floods in the Czech Republic would begin to surface. Now they have: along with earlier reports that people had been trying to sell flood-damaged foodstuffs, there is evidence that some individuals may have gone as far as to set up fraudulent charities pretending to collect money for flood victims. The birth rate here in the Czech Republic has been falling in recent years, and every year there are less and less new pupils enrolling at Czech schools. The new Minister of Education, Petra Buzkova, is planning to reduce the number of teachers, saying the money saved could be used to increase teachers' salaries. Alena Skodova has the story:

September 2nd marks the day an amazing 655 years ago that one of the most important and influential rulers of the Czech kingdom, was crowned - his name: Charles IV. The son of John of Luxembourg, Charles was named King of Bohemia in 1347; he was the first Czech monarch to become the King of the Romans, and, in 1355, Holy Roman Emperor - effectively making him the secular head of all of Western Christendom.

While the damage done by the recent devastating floods has not yet been calculated, the Czech Republic suffered another bout of torrential rain at the weekend, causing rivers to burst their banks. Some places have been hit by floodwater for third time in three weeks. Vladimir Tax reports.

The European Union's Commissioner for Enlargement, Gunter Verheugen, gave the Czech government reasons to be satisfied on Thursday, when he said that to all intents and purposes the EU already considered the Czech Republic an EU member. The main reason for his brief visit to the country on Thursday was to look at the damage caused by the recent catastrophic floods, and to offer EU support. Radio Prague's David Vaughan joined Mr Verheugen as he visited one of the most devastated parts of old Prague.
