Anyone interested in English-language theatre in Prague will do well to look up tickets for productions by the Prague Shakespeare Company, founded by the Texas-born Guy Roberts, who is also its artistic director. The company has a much anticipated production of Twelfth Night coming up at the Kolowrat Theatre as well as other plays on.

Last year British film director Jevan Chowdhury launched an exciting new project, entitled Moving Cities, capturing the spirit of modern cities through dance. Prague was the fifth location filmed, after capitals such as London and Paris.

The question of how historic instruments might have sounded veritably haunted Russian pianist Anton Rubinstein, who lamented that while some instruments that had survived in museums they had long lost their original colour and tone. This Saturday, Pilsen will officially become 2015 European City of Culture. The project will kick off with a grand opening ceremony, featuring more than 150 artists from the Czech Republic and abroad, the largest video mapping in the country and the sound of new bells from the local cathedral. I spoke to Jiří Sulženko, the head of the project's Programme Department, and started by asking about the spectacular opening event.

The Prague Symphony Orchestra is celebrating 80 years of existence. The renowned orchestra was founded in the 1930s and to this day is abbreviated as F.O.K. which stands for film, opera and concert, in Czech. In the early days, its members made a living by performances for radio and recording music for film.

Earlier this year, Jakub Hadrava, a third-year student of sculpture at the University of West Bohemia, made international headlines with an unusual installation at St. George’s church, a dominant but dilapidated site located in Lukova in the picturesque Plzeň countryside. Consisting of more than a dozen life-sized ghostly figures – which the artist seated in the church’s pews – the installation began attracting attention earlier this year, becoming a focal point for tourists from as close by as Germany and far off as Brazil.

Specialists have been conducting an extensive inventory of items at a villa in Prague 10 which was once owned by writer Karel Čapek and his brother Josef. Included on the list, is a trove of original sketches, drawings and handwritten letters found in a secret safe, reported just this week.

Born and raised in Prague, Tereza Límanová captures the city in an unusual way in her paintings. She paints mostly landscapes, but in an abstract and reduced style that may well stem from what she describes as an almost obsessive fear of kitsch. Many have noted that Australian film productions are all too rarely showcased in the Czech Republic. But the 1st Aussie Film Fest at Prague's Lucerna Cinema would like to change that. The modest two-day event will see screenings of a number of top Australian productions like 52 Tuesdays or Tracks.
