The third annual Prague Design Week 2016 kicked off in the Czech capital this week at Kafkův dům (Kafka’s House). Organisers of the event, which features more than 90 exhibits by established firms, graduates and up-and-coming designers, say they want to highlight both variety in design as well as elements of the process itself, how an idea goes from being a sketch on paper to a prototype to finished product.

This Sunday, sees the premiere of a new play at Prague’s New Stage of the National Theatre by Prague’s famous Tap Tap Orchestra – a unique band mostly made up of disabled musicians. In the past, The Tap Tap were behind pop hits like Řiditel autobusu; they even held events in which they showed it was possible to break all barriers, for example, rappelling – in wheel chairs – from Prague’s massive Nusle Bridge. Even so, the new play, entitled Nefňuka, years in the making, is promising to be their most ambitious project to date.

If you like classical music but don’t enjoy dressing up for events at big concert halls, you can now enjoy your favourite music from the comfort of your home in your slippers. A new project called Vážný zájem or Serious Interest brings classical musicians directly to your house or apartment. The only thing you have to do is sign up on a special website to connect with the musicians, invite some neighbours and friends to make up the numbers and make sure they have something to eat and drink after the concert is over.

The highly-respected Prague festival Days of European Film kicked off on Thursday, promising some of the best in recent European cinema. Among the cream of the crop this year are films like The Hunter, Mustang or Marshland (the last widely seen as Spain’s answer to the HBO series True Detective).

The annual festival of Arab culture, or Arabfest, got underway this week in the west Bohemian city of Pilsen. Now in its seventh year, the event offers a number of lectures by Czech and foreign experts, exhibitions, workshops, film screenings and more. The title of this year’s Arabfest is Together, and it focuses mainly on the topics of migration and refugees.

The Shockproof Festival is on at Prague’s arthouse cinema Aero. The festival, known for its focus on B-movie action films, gore, exploitation horror and more, this year is focusing largely on the theme of epidemiology and outbreaks (don’t be surprised if a zombie apocalypse is just around the corner).

In June, Prague will see the arrival of a new music festival called Metronome. The announcement this week made many headlines not least because organisers have confirmed a number of excellent acts including legendary American performer Iggy Pop.

Czech fashion designers from Prague’s Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design (UMPRUM), headed by curator Pavel Ivančic, won the main prize this week at London’s International Fashion Showcase. The event is part of London Fashion Week. The Czech installation, titled ‘Last Fata Morgana’ is the work of seven designers.

A lost composition by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri was recently discovered in the archives of the Czech Museum of Music in Prague. On Tuesday, the re-discovered cantata was performed to the public for the first time in years.

In today’s Arts we talk with a French Prague-based game designer Axel Droxler. He is the lead designer on two titles for the independent studio Dreadlocks, the popular debut Dex – set in a cyberpunk world – and the upcoming Ghost Theory, in which players take the roles of ghost hunters.
