The legend among Czech rock musicians, singer and songwriter Vladimír Mišík, is back. After a six year break, he and his band, Etc, recently released a new album “Ztracený podzim”, or Lost Autumn. Although the name and the album’s cover might suggest Vladimír Mišík has turned into a melancholic, he in fact back with a vengeance – the album is bursting with full, natural sound and raw energy.

United Flavour is a motley group of musicians formed in Prague in 2004. The band consists of seven members: lead singer Carmen, who is from Spain, founder and producer Djei from Ivory Coast, three native Czechs: Jaro, Standa, and Velocity, as well as Split, who is Slovak, and Bill from the US.

After three years of work, a new film by the Oscar-winning director Jan Svěrák called Kooky opened in Czech cinemas on Thursday. It is about a teddy bear lost in a forest inhabited by various fantastic creatures. It is shot using state of the art technology, and features the director’s father and son as voice actors.

The Nové divadlo (New Czech Theatre) was established in the Canadian city of Toronto in 1970. Since then it has enjoyed several high points: the great actor Jiří Voskovec appeared in one production, Josef Škvorecký wrote a play for the amateur group and it staged the world premiere of the Czech language version of Václav Havel’s Temptation. Recently the New Czech Theatre received an award from the Czech Foreign Ministry for its work in promoting the good name of its founders’ native country. In 2004 Vít Klusák and Filip Remunda made a big splash with Český Sen, or Czech Dream, about a hoax they pulled on shoppers in Prague, using a big advertising campaign to draw them to a non-existent hypermarket. The documentary, originally their final project at film school, received a good deal of international attention for the way it raised questions about consumerism in a post-communist society.

Divadlo Hurvínka a Spejbla – the theater of Hurvínek and Spejbl – has been a favorite destination for children in Prague for the past 65 years. It is home to the country’s most popular puppets, father Spejbl and his son Hurvínek. The Dejvice theater just returned to its original location that was closed down for two years due to renovation. Sarah Borufka visited the new space and even met the voice behind the puppets.

The late architect Jan Kaplický has been in the news a lot recently. A new documentary was released last week about the collapse of his dream to finally see one of his designs realised in Prague: the futuristic yellow structure, nicknamed the Blob, was to have served as a new National Library building, but met opposition from politicians. For weeks now ads on billboards, the metro, and Prague trams have advertised one of the biggest exhibitions of this artistic season – work by the internationally-acclaimed artist Jiří Georg Dokoupil at Prague Castle’s Riding School gallery. Lasting until May, the exhibition ‘Dokoupil 100’ should absolutely not be missed.

Filmy patří lidu (Films Belong to the People) is the title of a series of Socialist Realist pictures that have been released on DVD in the Czech Republic in recent months. These propaganda-filled films are from the 1950s, the harshest decade of the communist era, notorious for its brutal repression, show trials and forced labour camps.
