The Arts features last week's tribute to Vaclav Havel at Prague's National Theatre, which brought together the absolute cream of the Czech music and theatre worlds for a one-off event which may never be equaled. We also talk to the leader of the multi-talented Ecstasy of St Theresa, and take a quick look at the arts news.

In this week's Arts we look at some of the developments in the Czech world of film and will be hearing from the director of a Czech-English production of Milan Kundera's adaptation of Jacques and his Master, that's currently being performed at one of Prague's theatres:

Friday sees the opening of the tenth Febiofest in Prague - an international film, television, and video festival - with the premier of German director Tom Tykwer's latest movie "Heaven". Mr Tykwer, who also directed Run Lola Run, officially opens the festival in person at the Slovansky Dum multiplex cinema in the centre of Prague. The festival offers 850 screenings of 500 films. Its organiser Fero Fenic expects up to 150,000 visitors in the 27 cinemas in the cities of Prague, Brno, Ostrava, Liberec and others in Slovakia.

The Tatu duo has taken much of the world by storm and the Czech Republic appears to be no exception. Teenagers Jelena and Julie, who are probably the most eminent and promising project in Russian youth pop music, have been topping the charts first with "I've lost my mind" and now with "All the things she said" around the world and certainly have a good bulk of fans in the Czech Republic. The group's tour of the country finalised with the last of five concerts in Prague on Tuesday and concert organisers say over 25,000 tickets were sold.

In this week's Arts we have a round-up of the latest news, Ian Willoughby visits the Czech Film Centre to find out how the organisation is working to bring films from this country to a wider audience and Dean Vuletic profiles a classy Czech design magazine which is making waves internationally.

Josef Koudelka - Photographer is a retrospective that has been conceived on a grand scale with an absolute sense for detail and perfection. Taking place at the National Gallery's Trades Fair Palace in Prague, the exhibit captures forty years of Koudelka's work: five major periods in black and white from 1958 to the present that will leave few visitors untouched. The show includes Koudelka's famous portraits from the lives of Czechoslovak and Balkan gypsies, as well as the barren panoramas and bleak landscapes that he has worked on in recent

From Thursday the 23rd to Friday the 31st of this month, the FEBIO film and television company will be celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Febiofest - an international film, television and video festival. Spectators in Prague will be able to visit over ten theatres to view over five hundred productions from about fifty countries. Tereza Brdeckova is one of the organisers of the festival:

In our special arts review, which you may have heard on Radio Prague two days ago, Alena Skodova and I looked at some of the most interesting Czech cultural events that 2002 had to offer. In today's Arts I will be looking at selected events that visitors to Prague will be able to see in the next few months.

The Czech Republic is known abroad as a highly cultural country, and Prague - as the fifth most frequently visited European city - is especially popular for its arts programmes of all genres. On Radio Prague we'll spend the Christmas Day wandering through cultural events of the past year.
