This little square in the middle of Prague's Dusni Street is what the city's famous native, writer Franz Kafka, probably saw each time he looked out of his window. The historic Jewish Quarter in Prague is where Kafka spent most of his life - and often features in his novels and short stories. But despite that, for years there was no permanent memorial to the man who changed the face of 20th century literature. But now, all that has changed.

In this week's Arts, Dita Asiedu looks at some of the developments on the Czech cultural scene and talks to a Foreign Ministry representative about a travelling exhibition that presents four of the country's finest musicians to the world.

The Czech singer Ondrej Havelka and his group the Melody Makers do faithful and charming versions of jazz and popular songs from the 1920s and 30s. They are currently touring the Czech Republic. This week they played at Prague's magnificent Lucerna Hall, part of a complex which was designed by Vaclav Havel's grandfather and completed in 1921. When I spoke to Ondrej Havelka in a café in Lucerna just before Wednesday's concert he told me it was one of his favourite venues.

Staying with books and writing - an inspiring book has just been published, called "Ceske zeny" or "Czech Women". A team of authors, lead by Alena Wagnerova, compiled almost 60 profiles of important and interesting Czech women who have made history. Author Alena Wagnerova.

Two weeks ago, we told you that the sixty-five-year old Czech writer, Jiri Grusa, had been elected president of the International PEN Club at the organisation's congress in Mexico City. A few hours after Mr Grusa got off his plane in Vienna, where he serves as the Czech Republic's Ambassador, I caught up with the - in his own words - jetlagged new president in the Austrian capital and asked him about his objectives in his new post.

This week was marked by two major events in pop-music. On Tuesday a number of the Czech Republic's popular rock bands took part in a concert held in Prague called "S komunisty se nemluvi", or "You Shouldn't Talk to Communists". Precisely fourteen years after the fall of the communist regime in this country, the latest polls suggest an increase in the popularity of the Communist Party, making it now the country's second most popular political party.

Music and youth social work unite at the 10th anniversary of a civic organization called Proxima Sociale. The event took place at a vibrant Prague night club called Palac Akropolis last Friday. Proxima Sociale works in two large districts in Prague and offers various resources to youth, such as housing and psychological support, and they are also very active in recruiting possible candidates for these services on the street.
