| Subject of the stamp: | Hanuš Schwaiger (1854 - 1912): The Long, the Broad and the Sharpsight 1897, National Gallery in Prague H. Schwaiger, a Czech painter, graphic artist and illustrator, took his studies with M. Trenkvald and H. Makart at the Academy in Vienna. He was a teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. His works were influenced by the old Dutch masters and the main art movements of the 19th century - historism and realism. His visit to Holland intensified the influence of realism on his works, and realism became his most appreciated contribution to the art of Czech painting (The Fish Market in Gent, The Flower Market in Brugge). The climax of Schwaiger's creativity came in the 90s with his oil paintings of plain-air landscapes (The Vlašský Mill, The Rusava). |
