| Subject of the stamp: | The Italian Renaissance poet and prosaist, connoisseur of ancient culture and classical filology, F. Petrarca (1304-1374) is called the father of humanism. As a traveller on various diplomatic missions throughout the Europe he stayed with the Emperor Charles IV in Prague in 1355; the correspondence between them as well between Petrarca and the Archbishop Arnot of Pardubice and the Chancellor Jan of Středa contributed to the development of humanism in the Czech lands. In 1326 he met the noble Laura who inspired his lifelong creation of love lyrics collected in the Book of Songs which affected the European poetry. The deep psychological analysis and perfect poetic form and language of Petrarca's Italian lyrics was a novelty. He promoted the idea of a united Italy. The postage stamp is designed to commemorate the anniversary of his 700th birthday. | |
