| Subject of the stamp: | The children's book The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Graham (in Czech, Toad's Adventures) was first published in Czech in the 1930s with illustrations by Josef Čapek. The academic painter Jindra Čapek is already the fifth illustrator of this book of adventures of the rich Toad of Toad Hall who is very kindhearted but a bit down on his luck. His soft spot for cars leads to his incarceration. With the help of his friends he runs away in the guise of a washwoman only to find the Hall occupied with rioters. Toad has to win the Hall back. J. Čapek who lived and worked for many years in Germany illustrated over 50 children's books. |
