| Subject of the stamp: | Christmas festivities are perceived in our culture as the climax of the whole year. They are connected with a number of customs which combine Christian contents with pre-Christian elements of the Solstice festivities and with new civilization habits. The most important aspect of these festivities is the preparation for the Christmas Eve, symbolized with a lit decorated tree, fried carp, many kinds of sweets, lots of gifts both for children and adults. On the Eve, the famous Czech Christmas Mass composed by Jakub Jan Ryba is played in churches, decorated with the crib, and peace should rule over the country. The following days are the time when family members pay visit to each other and prepare for the coming New Year. | |
