| Subject of the stamp: | Max vabinský (1873-1962), Poor Countryside, 1900, National Gallery in Prague The painter and graphic designer Max vabinský, especially noted for his portraits, was a graduate of the Prague Academy of Graphic Arts where his professors included M. Pirner and J. Mařák. vabinský was a member of the Association of Graphic Artists Mánes, of the Czech Academy of Arts and Sciences, he was a co-founder of the Association of Graphic Artists Hollar, and eventually a professor and rector of the Academy of Graphic Arts in Prague. He was an immensely prolific artist covering a broad spectrum of genres, from painting and applied graphic arts to monumental projects. He created a number of painted or pen-and-ink portraits of leading Czech political and cultural personalities; but he was also a book illustrator and designer of banknotes and postage stamps. He contributed considerably to the development of graphic arts and woodcuts. His designs of stained glass windows and mosaics for the St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague represent the zenith of his activities in terms of monumental projects. vabinský ma |
