The painter and graphic designer Max Švabinský, especially noted for his portraits, was a graduate of the Prague Academy of Graphic Arts where his professors included M. Pirner and J. Mařák. Švabinský was a member of the Association of Graphic Artists Mánes, of the Czech Academy of Arts and Sciences, he was a co-founder of the Association of Graphic Artists Hollar, and eventually a professor and rector of the Academy of Graphic Arts in Prague. He was an immensely prolific artist covering a broad spectrum of genres, from painting and applied graphic arts to monumental projects. He created a number of painted or pen-and-ink portraits of leading Czech political and cultural personalities; but he was also a book illustrator and designer of banknotes and postage stamps. He contributed considerably to the development of graphic arts and woodcuts.
