The Legend of the White Lady

There are actually several "White Ladies" haunting castles in the Czech Republic. That is probably because a "White Lady" is such a handy thing to have around one's castle that as soon as the first one appeared at Pernstejn Castle, nobody else wanted to be without one. It's also a matter of prestige. You know how people are.

The usual story associated with a "White Lady" is that of the cruel husband - so cruel, that he persecutes his poor wife to death - and so she can have no rest, but must haunt the family castle.

But since she knows what it means to suffer, she is a nice ghost. She keeps an eye on her descendents, and always comes to help them in their hour of need. If a child is sick, and it looks like the baby will die - the White Lady appears in the night to rock the cradle - and by morning the baby is well! One White Lady, when one of her descendents had lost all his property (except the castle, luckily for him) and it looked like he was about to lose the castle as well - and he was at his lowest - the White Lady appeared and led him down the loneliest corridor of the entire castle. Suddenly, she disappeared into a wall. The man was a little delirious (before the White Lady had appeared, he had been busy drowning his sorrows and slowly drinking himself into a stupor) and he tried to follow her. When he'd dug through the stones in the wall, he found a false wall - and lo and behold, a hidden treasure!

So you can see what a very handy thing indeed a White Lady can be - and why so many Czech castles have one.
