[ December 4 ] [ November 24 ] [ November 20 ] By Peter SmithStarting with the hockey, and a run-down of the Staropramen Extraliga results from the weekend: Vsetin 2 Trinec 5 Kladno 2 Sparta 4 Vitkovice 7 Pardubice 3 Jihlava 3 Plzen 1 Karlovy Vary 2 Opava 2 Budejovice 2 Litvinov 2 Slavia 5 Zlin 5 So, the new leaders at the top of the league are HC Vitkovice, whose 7-3 win over Pardubice leapfrogs them over Vsetin into first. Vsetin's defeat at home to title contenders, Trinec means that the former pacesetters slip down to third with Trinec moving up to second. So, the situation at the top is like this: Vitkovice and Trinec are tied together on 42 points, with Vsetin a point behind. At the bottom of the league, the 2-2 draw between fellow strugglers, Karlovy Vary and Opava, means that neither of them make much headway in their efforts to avoid the promotion and relegation playoffs. Opava still prop up the league with 15 points - Karlovy Vary are just above with 18. In the first division, leaders Znojmo suffered a 3-1 away defeat at Pisek, but still remain 3 points clear of Liberec at the top - Liberec themselves fell to a shock 4-1 defeat at home to lowly Kometa Brno. Beroun move up to 4th place after their 6-2 home win over Havlickuv Brod. Now over to Lillehammer in Norway and the results of the women's 10km pursuit. Eva Hakova of the Czech Republic finished just behind the medals in 4th with a time of 1 hour 27 minutes. The title went to Galina Koukleva of Russia who took the event with a time of 59 minutes. Magdalena Forsberg of Sweden and Uschi Disl of Germany came in 2nd and 3rd. The result leaves Hakova in 4th place overall in the World Cup standings. Onto football, and Sparta Prague will wind up their Champions League campaign on Wednesday night by playing host to reigning European Champions, Borussia Dortmund. However, with Dortmund already assured top spot in the group and the Czech champions unable to clinch a quarter final berth, there seems to be little to play for. but national pride. And quickly a brief look at the draw for the World Cup Finals in France next summer. At the spectacular ceremony in Marseilles last Thursday, England were drawn to play Tunisia, Romania and Colombia in the opening round group matches - however, the United States were drawn in probably the most, shall we say, intriguing group.. together with Germany, Yugoslavia and Iran.
