Well, what with France 98, it may have seemed that the football never went in the first place.. but let's not forget that that the Czech Republic were not invited to that particular month-long World Cup party and the return of the domestic season has been eagerly anticipated by many.

More details of the opening day in a moment, but first those Gambrinus League results in full.

So, with defending champions and clear title favourites, Sparta Prague, in action against Plzen later today, it was the league's new-boys that stole the headlines this weekend.

Miroslav Beranek, the trainer of the tiny village upstarts, Blsany, expressed his delight with his side's 3-1 away victory at Teplice. After falling behind to a first half strike from Brabec, the newcomer's rallied in the second, with Simak, Bittengel and Pergl scoring Blsany's first ever top-flight goals.

The league's other new-boys, Karvina, also got of to a fine start, defeating Jablonec with the only goal of the game.

Among the title favourites, there were first day wins for both Slavia Prague and Sigma Olomouc,
