A government prohibition on events in the Czech Republic attended by 100 or more people is naturally having a major impact on sports in the country. The organisers of the two biggest sports leagues, in football and ice hockey, are taking a different approach to the measure introduced to combat the spread of the coronavirus.
The US beat the Czech Republic 3:4 in overtime in the World Junior Hockey Championship in Ostrava on Monday. The Czechs got one point for the overtime loss, setting up a huge Russia-Germany game on Tuesday. The team is now 3rd in Group B with four points and its place in the quarterfinals remains uncertain.
Lukáš Krpálek has won the annual Czech Sportsman of the Year
competition. The Judo world champion beat second placed basketball player
Tomáš Satoránský by 74 points. The Boston Bruins's ice hockey
right winger David Pastrňák placed third. The winners in the collective
category were the Czech national basketball team, who placed sixth in this
year's FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Aside from ice hockey star Jaromír Jágr, Mr Krpálek is one of only two men to win the award in the past 14 years.
Retired forward Václav Nedomanský has become the second Czech to be inducted into ice hockey’s Hall of Fame. A member of the Czechoslovak world championship winning team in 1972, was the first player from behind the Iron Curtain to defect and play in the NHL. Nedomanský joins goaltender Dominik Hašek, who is the only other Czech to receive this accolade.
Retired forward Václav Nedomanský has become the second Czech to be
inducted into ice hockey’s Hall of Fame in Toronto. The other Czech to
have received this accolade was goaltender Dominik Hašek, back in 2014.
Nedomanský, now 75 and living in California, was a member of the Czechoslovak world championship winning team in 1972 and scored 163 goals in 220 games for the national side.
He later fled from communist Czechoslovakia and arrived in Toronto via Switzerland. It was not until Nedomanský was 33 that he began his career in the NHL, with stops at the Detroit Red Wings, the New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues.
After his active career, Nedomanský initially worked as a coach, in Schwenningen and Innsbruck. After the fall of the Iron Curtain, he worked as a scout in Europe for the Los Angeles Kings.
The Czech Republic’s ice hockey players have won the Karjala Tournament
in Finland after a 3:0 victory over Russia on Sunday gave them three wins
out of three. The Czechs’ goals came from Kovár, Sedlák and Nestrašil.
It is only the second time ever that the Czech Republic has won the Karjala Tournament, which is the opening event in the four-nation Euro Hockey Tour.
The Czech Republic’s ice hockey players made it two wins out of two with victory over hosts Finland in the Karjala Tournament on Saturday night. The Czechs sealed a 3:2 victory on penalties in that game in Helsinki. They now face Russia in a game to decide the winners of the competition, which is the first event in the four-nation Euro Hockey Tour.

The 23-year-old Czech international scored all of the Capitals goals through the first two periods of Sunday’s game and was named the most valuable player of the match.
Vrána now has nine goals to his credit this season.
One of the Czech Republic’s most famous football stars, Petr Čech will
now be minding the goal on skates. The former Chelsea and Arsenal
goalkeeper has agreed to play as a goalkeeper in the British ice hockey
team Guildford Phoenix until the end of the season. His ice hockey debut

The National Hockey League’s 2019-20 regular season begins on Friday when
the Philadelphia Flyers take on the Chicago Blackhawks at Prague’s O2
Several Czech nationals will face off against each other. Playing for the Flyers is Jakub Voráček, the team’s right winger and an alternate captain. Playing for the Blackhawks are forward David Kämpf and centre Dominik Kubalík, in his NHL debut.
Although originally drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 2013, Kubalík has had to wait until now for a chance to actually play in the NHL and spent last season playing in Switzerland.
This is the third straight year that the NHL returns to Europe as part of its efforts to grow the local fan base in hockey-mad countries such as the Czech Republic.
The match starts at 8pm local Prague time. It is the showcase event of the 2019 NHL Global Series.
