Mount Říp

Říp is the best-known Czech mountain. According to legend the primal father Čech (Czech) brought his folk to Říp and settled here thanks to the fertile land. The top of this basalt bell-shaped mountain was probably a cult site in prehistoric times, and both prehistoric and medieval ceramic fragments have been found there. On the top we find the Romanesque Rotunda of St. George, dating from the 11th century. Říp has been a favourite place for pilgrimage and folk gatherings throughout Czech history. One of the most beautiful views of the Central Bohemian Massif (České středohoří), and the Krušné Mountains can be enjoyed from the top of Říp. During good weather you can see as far as Prague.
