How does the Czech Communist Party views the Prague Spring and its defeat?
Return |
The Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia is convinced that the
suppression of the 1968 Prague Spring by Soviet-led forces suited
Western politicians, since it could be used to argue against
socialist tendencies back then, when leading Western countries
were racked by left-wing movements seeking a change in the system,
Moreover, the contemporary communists said in a statement, the 1968 leadership of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia behaved as if no political danger existed, focusing on internal matters and losing the ability to think realistically in an international context. The communists think, however, that the invasion was a negative step which damaged the prestige of socialism worldwide, creating the idea that it was inseparable from a stiff bureaucratic system. This led to the widespread opinion that socialism could not be reformed, an opinion that the Czech communists strongly deny. Reforms in 1968 started quite energetically, but gradually split into endless debates and disputes, the communists say, pointing out that groups also emerged back then whose aims became apparent after the 1989 Velvet Revolution. |
